Where do DirectX/DirectShow developments take place? The analysis of a worldwide query for positions with "DirectX OR DirectShow" on Monster.com produces a fascinating result, shown in the attached chart below. More than 50% of the positions advertised are located in the USA. And India comes next with 24%. Taken together, these two countries represent more than three quarters of the market.

Is this result caused by an non-representative geographical distribution of Monster.com adds? Apparently, the answer is "no", as an analysis of other local job adds confirm, for example, that there are only a handful such jobs offers in the UK, and virtually none in France. Other development domains do not show the same distribution, for example the US and India together represent only 48% of the worldwide Delphi jobs advertised.

But the same search on "OpenGL" surprisingly produces nearly the same result, with the US and India totaling again 78%.

What does it mean? The video and 3D display programming market seems dominated by US companies (and their Indian subsidiaries). Does it mean that no one is doing DirectX, DirectShow or OpenGL programming elsewhere? Surely not, but there is very little activity, or this activity is not recognized as a developer "specialty".
